| Hi all! I've always found this newsgroup very informative and very professional. However, my ISP, Rogers, sent me a notice this morning that it was discontinuing its Newsnet feed starting December 15.. I find it senseless to pay for a feed for one newsgroup only: *rec.photo.digital* . Can someone suggest a free alternative. Thanks. Marcel | ||

If 5 bucks a month doesn't mean you'll be skipping meals, you might want to try Supernews or Giganews. They have plans starting at that rate. Of course you can also join the league of cheap-ass nitwits, spammers and miscreants and go to Google groups.. It's web access, but it's free.

But unlike most other servers, Astraweb's blocks don't expire after a month or some other period. The smallest block costs $10 and is good for 25 GB. They carry rec.photo.digital and if you use Astraweb only for text newsgroups such as r.p.d. that $10 fee might well last for decades before a significant dent is put into that 25 GB limit. The claimed retention is 25 days. Still another is news.individual.net. They've been highly regarded for a number of years but are no longer free: > Important notice: > > Effective from April 1st, 2005, use of News.Individual.NET is not free of > charge anymore. The news service continues as a fee-based service. The > fee for an account for News.Individual.NET is 10 EUR per year (annual > payment), that converts to only 0.84 EUR per month. Unlike Astraweb, they carry no binary newsgroups. But instead of an overall retention of 25 days, the minimum retention for most heirarchies appears to be 41 days, with "rec" being 61 days. I can't verify that "rec" contains rec.photo.digital, but it probably does. http://www.news.astraweb.com/ http://news.individual.net/

They obviously have their own Agenda in mind. I don't believe their so called justification for not providing NG's any more. We are supposed to read blogs which according to them is what most people do.They also put my high speed lite version up $5.00 a month to add insult to injury.. I got a notice yesterday from them, but I knew about this from one of the Toronto NG's a week or so ago. I got some ideas there but haven't had time to check them out. I will look at what they suggested when I have a minute and let you know what they are. I have been kind of busy but will need to look for a news provider soon. I am so ticked off with Rogers, I might have changed to Sympatico DSL but they are not in my area even though I live in the city. It has something to do with you have to with being close to a transmission terminal or something. so people in surrounding area could have it, and you might not, even if you live in the city. I think its probably something along those lines though and definitely for Rogers benefit and not for customers benefit but we will never know as it is behind-the-scenes. Even the wording Rogers use on their web site and the message sent to Rogers customers sound fake and contrived. Their supposed justification is because Usenet is out of date and people mainly have blogs now and there is always MS Instant Message, and there is always google groups. They said that only 30, 000 of Rogers customers use Usenet. That is quite a lot of users. My monthly Internet bill never went down because of withdrawal of NG's. It went UP. I have lite high speed internet.Somehow, it reminds me of companies who say "this is for the customers benefit or protection or convenience" when you can easily see is for THEIR benefit. > In any event, I've signed up with EasyNews. I switched isp's but never updated google which lets me sign in on the obsolete account I don't use google ng's now. You can sign up with Netzero or free email account and get yourself a throw away account. Google is slow to update posts. I used to use teranews, they were free at the time I used them - quite good. I'm also a Rogers customer who has been forced to look elsewhere for a newsfeed because of Rogers's decision to discontinue providing Usenet service to its customers. I will not be switching to Giganews or any Giganews reseller, however. My reason for avoiding them is that I'm suspicious that the recent Usenet changes by Rogers are part of an orchestrated business plan between Rogers and Giganews to remove Usenet costs from Rogers and deliver additional Usenet revenue to Giganews. If true, they should come out and say so. It was only a short time ago that Rogers discontinued its own NNTP servers and switched its customers onto Giganews servers. Now just a few months later, Rogers is discontinuing Usenet service altogether and has posted a notice on its web pages suggesting that its customers can continue getting Usenet by buying it from Giganews. All this seems too coincidental to be anything but part of a pre-formulated business plan to move customers from Rogers's free Usenet service to Giganews's fee-based service. Perhaps this is being too paranoid but I doubt it. In any event, I've signed up with EasyNews. I originally signed up with NewsHosting but cancelled that service when they failed to activate posting rights despite numerous requests using their proscribed methods. I am happy with EasyNews.

I haven't heard that its bad in Toronto area. My daughter has Sympatico and they haven't complained about it. To compare, look at: > http://www.canadianisp.com/ I've seen that site before, but I am not looking for a new ISP right now. Rogers is OK for emails and browsing. They were down in my area for 4 hours a few nights ago, but must have been something big as they are not usually down that long. For the most part, they seem to be reliable. As I said above, I can't get Sympatico high speed anyway as they are not available in my area of the city. I am going to look for a free news server that is good if there are any. I only need text news server. I don't do binaries. Why don't you just look for a free news server and stay with Rogers? Their email and internet service is usually OK. I just don't like their politics. They have too much monopolyof the market now in TV cable and into cell phones and other interests, and not much competition. Never a good scenario. > If you need more info, write to me directly at: c-o-s-m-a-r-AT- r-o-g-e-r-s- > DOT- c-o-m (without al the -----) OK. I noted your address. Cathy

Marcel- I was faced with this problem when AOL ended their access to newsgroups. I found a web site that claims to furnish the latest info on free news servers at http://freenews.maxbaud.net/ . If you only want to read and not post, probably the best (most newsgroups) is news-read2.maxwell.syr.edu . If you want to post and are willing to tolerate occasional outages, try aioe.cjb.net . (They do not have any binary groups.) While your ISP still provides newsgroup access, check out the group, alt.free.newsservers . Fred
